Marianne Westman (1928-2017) was born in Sweden. She was a Swedish designer and ceramicist and she is considered to be one of Sweden’s foremost designers of porcelain tableware.
Marianne started in 1946 her ceramics studies at the prestigious University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. After graduation in 1950 she was working in the famous Rorstrand ceramic factory in Lidköping. This was the company’s golden age and its procelain manufacture was extremely successful abroad.
In the 1960s Marianne expanded her range into artistic pieces made of stoneware, chamotte and iron.
Glazes were thick and complex, with iron flowers and coarse structures. Shapes were simple, feeling rustic yet elegant.
Marianne worked at Rörstrand until 1971, earning the nickname "porcelain mother" there. At Rörstrand, she designed among other things, the now classic, nature-inspired tableware Picknick and the blue-flowered Mon Amie (1952). Both are now referred to as typical examples of Scandinavian 1950s design.
Marianne Westman left Rorstrand in the early 1970s. She worked a few years for Skruf glassworks, and a few German ceramic factories. Marianne eventually returned to her hometown, Falun, in 1977 to design patterns for the family's textile studio.
